Local Ammenity
The CBD is the best serviced area in Brisbane in terms of retail and social amenity, fundamentally acting as
a ‘gateway’ to the rest of the city. There is an abundance of shopping available within the area – namely
focussed within the retail centres of the Myer Centre, Queens Plaza and Broadway on the Mall. Brisbane’s
iconic Wintergarden shopping centre is currently undergoing a $100 million facelift and is expected to
become Brisbane’s most sophisticated shopping destination upon completion in 2012.
• All of these major retail centres are focussed around the Queen Street Mall which is home to a plethora of
retailers and restaurants and operates 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.. Other notable areas include the
high-end Edward Street precinct and the weekend Riverside markets.
• Many of Brisbane’s best restaurants and bars are also located in the CBD with the Riverside and Eagle
Street Pier precinct representing a world class destination in their own right.
• Brisbane’s Treasury Casino is located at the George Street end of the Brisbane Mall and is one of
Brisbane’s most popular destinations. The Casino operates 24 hours a day and offers a wide variety of
entertainment operations, bars and restaurants. The Casino is housed in the historic Treasury building
which is one of Brisbane’s truly iconic buildings.
• The well known Southbank leisure precinct is within walking distance across the river and is Brisbane’s
premier cultural, recreational and entertainment precinct. The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC),
The Queensland Art Gallery, The Queensland State Library, The Queensland Museum & Science Centre,
and The Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA).
• Brisbane’s South Bank is considered to be unlike any other lifestyle precinct in the world having been
awarded the best public sector development in the world by the International Real Estate Federation and the world’s best downtown public space by the International Downtown Association.8
• More than eleven million people visit South Bank annually making it Brisbane’s number one tourist
destination and a huge contributor to the local economy.
• Brisbane’s South Bank is bordered by Little Stanley Street which features a range of boutique shops, a wide variety of restaurants, a cinema and Griffith University’s South Bank Campus.
• Fortitude Valley, which is Australia’s only designated entertainment precinct is also a short distance to the
north of the CBD. Fortitude Valley is widely recognized as the home of live music and Brisbane’s vibrant
night life scene – all focussed around the Brunswick Street Mall which also offers a variety of dining options.
• Running parallel to the Brunswick Street Mall is the Chinatown Mall, Brisbane’s cultural home to Chinese
culture and cuisine. The long-established Chinatown Mall is home to a wide variety of Chinese restaurants,
food stores specializing in Chinese produce in addition to a variety of medical and commercial businesses
