The Mackay Region is the name given to the area on the central Queensland coast. The area is centered on the main city of Mackay which has a population of over 90,000 people. The city is located 970km north of Brisbane and is governed by the Mackay Regional council. The area’s economy is dominated by sugar cane farming close to the coast and small mining communities located in the inland areas. Mackay is the commercial centre of the region offering a laidback lifestyle with incredible access to some of Australia’s most picturesque tropical attractions. The city is small with a mixture of the old and new converging in the city centre and providing the opportunity to live in medium density apartments on the coast, suburban housing or rural living. One of the main advantages of Mackay is its location and proximity to major tourism sites. The city is well connected to other areas of the state with the Bruce Highway connecting the region to its northern and southern coastal neighbors and the Peak Downs Highway connecting the city with other towns in the regions south west. Mackay also has the North Coast Railway Line running through it. Mackay Airport offers regional flights and flights to capital cities in Australia making the Mackay Region easily accessible to people around the country. There are a number of private and public schools in Mackay and throughout the region. Mackay has 11 state primary schools and 3 state high schools operated by the Queensland state government Department of Education. Private schools are also available in the region however the majority are based in Mackay. Campuses of James Cook University and the Central Queensland University are also located in Mackay along with TAFE campuses.
