Sydney Property Investment

Sydney is the most populated city in Australia with over 4,200,000 people calling it home. It is the state capital of NSW and is the largest city geographically in Australia. It is situated on the South East coast of Australia and is home to some of Australia’s world renowned icons such as the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and Bondi Beach. Sydney is a very multi-cultural city with a high percentage of immigrants moving to Sydney.

There are 38 Local Government Areas (LGA) which make up Sydney. These LGAs include:
Ashfield, Auburn, Bankstown, Baulkham Hills, Blacktown, Botany, Bay, Burwood, Camden, Campbelltown, Canada Bay, Canterbury, Fairfield, Holroyd, Hornsby, Hunter's Hill, Hurstville, Kogarah, Ku-ring-gai, Lane Cove, Leichhardt, Liverpool, Manly, Marrickville, Mosman, North Sydney, Parramatta, Penrith, Pittwater, Randwick, Rockdale, Ryde, Strathfield, Sutherland, Sydney, Warringah, Waverley, Willoughby, Woollahra.

Education:

There are a number of private and public schools in the region as well as a selection of universities.
Australia’s oldest university, University of Sydney, was established in 1850. There are five other universities primarily in Sydney. These are the Australian Catholic University, Macquarie University, University of New South Wales, the University of Technology, Sydney and the University of Western Sydney. Other universities which operate secondary campuses in Sydney include the University of Notre Dame Australia and the University of Wollongong.

Sydney is also home to four government funded Technical and Further Education (TAFE) facilities. These are Sydney Institute of Technology, Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE, Western Sydney Institute of TAFE and South Western Sydney Institute of TAFE. Each of these institutions have multiple campuses.

Sydney has public, denominational and independent schools. Public schools, including pre-schools, primary and secondary schools, and special schools are administered by the New South Wales Department of Education and Training. There are four state-administered education areas in Sydney, that together co-ordinate over 900 schools. There are 30 selective high schools in the state of which 25 are in Sydney.

Infrastructure:

The main way for people to travel in Sydney is by car. There are number of major transport roads which create the Sydney Orbital Network. The Metroad system in Sydney accounts for 9 major arterial roads. These are numbered form 1 to 10 and exclude 8 which has been reserved for another major arterial road in the future.

The Metroads are:
Metroad 1 - Wahroonga to Waterfall via the M1 Eastern Distributor & the city of Sydney
Metroad 2 - Artarmon to Windsor via the Lane Cove Tunnel & M2 Hills Motorway
Metroad 3 - Blakehurst to Mona Vale via Hurstville, Olympic Park, Ryde, Macquarie Park & St. Ives
Metroad 4 - Sydney to Lapstone via Parramatta Road & the M4 Western Motorway
Metroad 5 - Sydney Airport to Campbelltown via the M5 South Western Motorway
Metroad 6 - Heathcote to Pennant Hills via Bankstown, Carlingford & Pennant Hills
Metroad 7 - Casula to Wahroonga via the Westlink M7 & Pennant Hills.
Metroad 9 - Campbelltown to Windsor
Metroad 10 - North Sydney to Mona Vale via Dee Why & Mosman

There is also an extensive public transport system. Modes of transport include taxis, train, bus and ferry. Sydney Trains are operated by City Rail. A link to a map of their network can be found here.
The Sydney buses network maps can be found here. Sydney Buses mainly in the inner city and CBD as a monopoly while contracting out the services to private companies in some of the surrounding suburbs.

There is also the privately owned Metro Light Rail which runs from Central to Lilyfield. Stops include Pyrmont Bay; Star City; John Street Square; Fish Market; Wentworth Park; Glebe; Jubilee Park; Rozelle Bay and Lilyfield.

Sydney’s main airport is Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, located in the suburb of Mascot. It services all of Sydney’s national and international flights. Smaller regional airports are located at Bankstown, Camden and Hoxton Park.

Things to Do:

Sydney offers endless options of things to do from the surfing at the sandy beaches along the east coast to having a picnic at any of the grassy open parklands and gardens through the region. Major shopping centres are never to far away and there plenty of cultural activities to attend. Popular museums include the Powerhouse museum, The Maritime Museum, the Art Gallery of NSW, Museum of Contemporary Art and the Australian Museum to name a few. You can walk through a number of open gardens throughout the Sydney city or visit the world famous Taronga Zoo.

There are also plenty of sporting teams to support. Many sports are watched during the year with Sydney home to the Sheffield shield Blues (Cricket), Sydney FC (Soccer), Sydney Swans (AFL), Warratahs (Rugby Union), Sydney Spirit (Basketball) and more than 50% of the Rugby League teams in the national competition. Other sporting events held in Sydney include the City to Surf (Foot race from Sydney CBD to Bondi Beach), Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and the golden Slipper (Horse Racing).

Popular nightspots in Sydney include the CBD, Kings Cross, Darling Harbour, The Rocks, Oxford Street and Circular Quay. Star City is Sydney’s only casino and is located in Darling Harbour. There are plenty of other popular night spots scattered through Sydney including Bondi Beach, Manly, Newtown, Leichardt, Parramatta, Cronulla and Balmain.

Sydney is also host to a number of events throughout the year which include the Sydney Festival, Tropfest, The Sydney Royal Easter Show, The Archibald Prize, Australian Fashion Week, Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Sydney Film Festival, Big Day out as well as many more. Other events which Sydney has held in the past include The Sydney Olympics (2000) and the Rugby World Cup (2003).
