Hunter Region/ Newcastle

The Hunter Region is the name given to an area of New South Wales starting approximately 120km north of Sydney. The region has a substantial population with around 590,000 people calling it home. The Hunter region is a popular tourist destination as people are attracted to the area for its numerous wineries and beautiful scenery.

There are 11 local government areas in the region which include:
Newcastle City Council, Singleton Shire, Muswellbrook Shire, Upper Hunter Shire Council, Port Stephens Council, Great Lakes Council, Maitland City Council, Lake Macquarie City Council, Cessnock City Council, Gloucester Shire Council and Dungog Shire Council.

- Sydney to Newcastle F3 Freeway which is the main link between the two cities
- Pacific Highway connects Newcastle to other areas of the Hunter, northern NSW and Brisbane 
- New England Highway which connects many areas such as Brisbane and to the north-west  of NSW through the New England region. (Upper Hunter towns of Maitland, Singleton, Muswellbrook and Scone).
- Golden Highway 
-  Newcastle and Karuah Bypass

The region also has a very effective rail system with train services linking the Hunter area with Brisbane, Sydney and smaller centre’s such as Tamworth and Moree. The train services also link several destinations within the Hunter.

A wide ranging bus service exists throughout the Hunter region with state transit operating a constant reliable service in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas as well as private companies servicing smaller population centres.

Newcastle Airport is the main airport in the region located 30 minutes outside the city.
