Date: 3 December 2011 The big cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane have adopted the inner city lifestyle that is so evident in Manhattan, London and Paris. A long commute to work is a major contributor too. Long commutes for 45 minutes or longer are more likely to leave people dissatisfied with their lives, leading many to take action. Here young people are most likely to take action and this is evidenced by the average age of café customers in all of the inner suburban centres of our big cites. As housing affordability worsens and first-home buyers are increasingly pushed to outer suburbs, inner city rental demand and apartment purchase demand, is surging. Commuting times on average had increased, particularly as more Australians moved to the urban fringe. Yet work remains close to our CBD areas and the result is an increased load on our already struggling roads ... and more time spent commuting. Surveys inform us that people with a journey to work of 45 minutes or longer are much per cent more likely to be dissatisfied with their family relationships than short-trip commuters. There can be costs to social and family lives ... when you get home at 7pm you are not going to have the time or the energy to coach the local sport, for example. Pity the people who spend 90 minutes driving to the rail station, on the train and then walking to their job in the city. Driving to work would make a two-hour round trip. Little wonder then that people are even prepared to forego the benefits of buying an apartment with a car space, rather choosing the cheaper option – perhaps a one-bedder with no car space in Rushcutters Bay or St Kilda for between $350,000 and $550,000. For most people borrowing to buy an apartment in an inner suburb is comparable to renting when the calculations are done on a 25 percent deposit. Some developers around Sydney and Melbourne have begun marketing their inner suburban developments on this two tiered price structure (with or without parking) in order to pick up on the frustrated commuter effect.
